March 2009 Community Conversation

The Lawrence Township Community Foundation hosted a Community Conversation with members of the community, local businesses, non-profits and students in the Clark Music Center at The Lawrenceville School on Rt. 206 on March 21, 2009 from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Underwritten by the Bill Guhl Fund, the community had an opportunity to enjoy refreshments while meeting neighbors, community officials and visited with local non-profit organizations to learn more about the services, programs and volunteer opportunities they provide.

The program started at 9:30 a.m. with moderator, Calvin Thomas from the Support Center for NonProfit Management who outlined the format and objectives for the morning’s discussion. Community members had an opportunity to communicate their concerns or thoughts in two open discussion forums. Some of the most common topics of conversation included but were not limited to:

  1. the need for greater communication tools in the town,
  2. a community center,
  3. bridging the gap between north and South Lawrence,
  4. identifying the boundaries of Lawrence Township, and
  5. getting seniors and youth more involved.

One of the projects that was advanced with the support of community members and the Township was to identify the boundaries of Lawrence Township. The Lawrence Township Community Foundation donated $5,000 towards the purchase of five signs and Brittain-Parnell donated one sign. Soon six new Welcome to Lawrence signs will be installed at various entry points to identify entrances to Lawrence Township. Community member, Paul Schindel with Three Bears LLC designed multiple designs for selection. A design and slogan contest was held at Community Day in October 2009 and the winning design will be revealed at the unveiling of the new signs. The installation of these signs is pending the receipt of permits from the state. Unveiling details will soon follow.
